Wednesday, Aug. 23

UAB professor to give Physiologists in Training Lecture

Dr. Suzanne Oparil, Distinguished Professor of Medicine, professor of cell, developmental and integrative biology, section chief of vascular, and director of the Vascular Biology and Hypertension Program in the Division of Cardiovascular Disease at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, will give the Department of Physiology’s Physiologists in Training Distinguished Lecture, “My Road to Academic Cardiology,” from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 23, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Endocrinologist to discuss mice, man, aldosterone regulation

Dr. Celso Gomez-Sanchez, professor of medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, will present “Of Mice and Man: The Regulation of Aldosterone Biosynthesis in Primary Aldosteronism,” at noon on Thursday, Aug. 24, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

The seminar is sponsored by the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research, the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research and the Cardiorenal and Metabolic Diseases Research Center.

Pitt orthopaedist to take swing at elbow, hand injuries in baseball

Dr. Mark Baratz, clinical professor and vice chair of orthopaedics at the University of Pittsburgh, will give the J. T. Davis Guest Lecture Series presentations, “What is Your Favorite Song?” and “Elbow and Hand Injuries in Professional Baseball,” from 6:30-8 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 25, in classroom 6A.

Emcure scientist to offer case study on insulin inhibitors

Dr. Abhijit Roychowdhury, principal scientist for Emcure Pharmaceuticals, Pune, India, will give the Microbiology and Immunology Seminar presentation, “Discovery of Novel Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 Receptor Inhibitors – A Case Study,” at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 25, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Biochemist to investigate androgens’ role in women’s health

Dr. Licy L. Yanes Cardozo, assistant professor of biochemistry in the Department of Medicine/Endocrinology, will give the Department of Biochemistry presentation, “Do Androgens Play a Role in Women’s Health?” at 3 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 28, in classroom 3A.

Pennington professor to uncover weight loss difficulty

Dr. Steven Heymsfield, professor at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, will present “Obesity: Why is Weight Loss so Difficult to Maintain?” at noon on Thursday, Aug. 31, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Medicine chair candidate to discuss heart failure drug developments

Dr. Javed Butler, director of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and co-director of the Heart Institute at Sony Brook University and UMMC chair of medicine candidate, will present “Similarities Between Drug Developments for Heart Failure and Providing Health Care” from noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Chancellor, vice chancellor to speak at faculty meeting

Dr. Jeffrey Vitter, University of Mississippi chancellor, and Dr. LouAnn Woodward, vice chancellor for health affairs, are scheduled to speak at the fall faculty meeting at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 31, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Vitter and Woodward will provide an update on the university and the Medical Center for the next fiscal year. The agenda also will include a recognition of faculty with 20 years of service.
